Remember those days when going to the beach for vacation made you all giddy and excited?! Who am I kidding – I still get that way today!!! There’s nothing more nostalgic than the smell of salty air, sand in your toes, and the sound of waves crashing on the beach as you’re falling asleep. As a kid, I have memories of dreaming about what our beach cottage would look like. I couldn’t wait to see how our place was decorated. I loved seeing the kitsch art, crazy colors, and eclectic interiors. Those where some fond memories. Today, I get to create spaces drawing upon those memories. Check out this dated guest bedroom – gone surf side!
Before the Makeover
You might be saying to yourself, this space already looks like what beach cottages looked like back in the day. And, I would have to agree with you. Some still look this way, and there’s nothing wrong with that! However, when I was asked to give this space an update, a fresh kitsch beach style look was where I turned to modernize this space.
It’s all in the Beachy Details
For this look, we mixed and matched bright, fun details with clean, white furniture. The new furniture pieces are from the Tommy Bahama Home “Ivory Key Collection”. Click each image for more information, or go here Wayfair . For more information about the Bedding, click Overstock.
A little DIY
The original white walls and natural brown color of the twin headboards weren’t cutting it for this Bright and Beachy guest bedroom makeover. So… out came the paint brushes, and on went the paint! The walls are painted Blue Sky and the headboards are painted Fusion, both by Sherwin-Williams.
Beachy Kitsch Details
A bit of kitsch whimsy is always fun when I think about the beach. Click on photo for more information about each item.
Here’s another angle which shows off the great shell table lamp, distressed lanterns, and some beachy artwork in the same blue/green color palette. For more information about purchasing any of these details, got to Overstock.
Bold colors often seem intimidating on their own, but pairing them with the right accessories and inter-mixing them with neutral elements can bring down the shock factor and make even the most color phobic person love them! If you’re hesitant, start by choosing a few accessories in an unexpected color and infusing them into your space. Or go all-out with a new wall color! Either way, we hope these spaces have inspired you to put aside hesitation and surround yourself with the colors you love!
Beachy Sounds
Sound plays an influential part in how we view the world. It gives us social cues and evokes certain emotions. Sound is associated with memories, and its effects drive the story. I found this great little sound machine that has the best ocean sounds. I fall asleep every night listening to the sound of the waves crashing on the beach. To finish off your Bright & Beachy makeover, include sound for that extra little detail! For more information about this great find of mine, simply click the image or go to Overstock.
