Pillow Talk

For me, when I think about sleepy time, it’s important to satisfy my visual senses first. Of course, comfort is not far behind on the list. Piling on soft, fluffy, luxurious pillows not only makes me want to jump into bed but helps hide my everyday pillows. The bed is usually the focal point of the room. Decorative pillows are an opportunity to add color and texture to give visual interest.

Key points to keep in mind when contemplating the finishing touches on your bed:

  • LAYERING – add up to three rows of pillows and sometimes, if it will fit, a fourth row of pillows.
  • SIZE – begin with the first row in front of your “everyday” pillows. Use large, then medium, then small pillows and sometimes extra small pillows as you build your rows down your bed.
  • COLOR make one of your rows a neutral color like white or off/white. I like to make this the first row with the largest pillows. The second row, I like to use a color represented in the bed, like the “main” color. Then, the third and possibly fourth rows using an accent color. This color can be a completely random or minimally used color in your space.
  • TEXTURE – If mixing textures is your thing, use one row of smooth pillows and two rows of different textures. You can stay within the same color palette or vary it.  Try not to use the same textures for any of the rows.

LASTLY – Throw all of that away. There really isn’t a steadfast rule. Once you get the basics down, experiment and have fun with it

I think I hear my bed calling… Sweet Dreams EVERYONE!
